CHAPTER 14

JETT

I pulled up the front of my T-shirt and wiped sweat off my brow before it trickled into my eyes. There was nothing better than running to clear my head and work off my nervous energy.

"I can't believe you do this for fun," Jude said. He was sweating worse than I was and his face was red.

I dropped my shirt back into place. "Who said it was fun? No one forced you to come with me."

"You did," he said. "You gave me those puppy dog eyes and said something about not wanting to go out by yourself."

I snorted. "That is bullshit. I said I need some air and I'm going for a run. You're the doofus who followed me." We had a guys night last night. At my place, as usual. For some reason, they all gravitated towards my deck. Something about it being the perfect party deck. I think they just liked to make a mess so I have to clean it up and not them.

They all crashed at my place afterwards. When we left, the other guys were still snoring.

"Yeah well." Jude shrugged. "According to Roman, I need to get fitter before the tour."

"You chose an instrument where you get to sit on your ass and play," I pointed out. "Why do you need to be fit?" I also got to sit down and play, of course, but my arms got a workout.

"Something about our public image, or my health, or something. I don't know, I tuned out after the first couple of minutes. You know how Roman likes to drone on about things."

I chuckled. When he got started, it was very hard to stop or even slow the man down. That was one of the things that made him such a good manager. He was passionate. I was pretty sure he loved nothing more than to get on our case every chance he got.

"It doesn't hurt to look after ourselves," I said. "This can't all be about beer and hamburgers."

"It can't?" Jude asked. "Why not? Those both sound good to me."

I glanced over to him. "Okay, it can't only be about beer and hamburgers. Is that better?"

"Much better," he agreed. "Can we walk now?"

"I guess so." I slowed to a fast walk. "Did Roman also tell you to keep an eye on me or something?"

"Of course not," Jude said. "Would it be so bad if he did? We all know how tense you get this close to a tour. You wouldn't want to knock out a brain cell or two."

I exhaled out my nose in frustration. "I'm not a five-year-old."

"You're not even a high-strung socialite," Jude agreed. "But you are the anchor of this whole band. If you lose it, than the rest of us are going to end up in the middle of the ocean somewhere. And I don't know about you, but I can't swim."

"So, you're my self appointed nursemaid?" I said.

"I really did need the exercise," he protested. "I needed to work off all that beer and burgers.
